Cárdenas liegt 20 km östlich von Varadero und wird auch die 'Stadt der Fahrräder' genannt. In der Tat gibt es in Cárdenas sehr viele Fahrräder!

Cárdenas is located 20 km to the east of Varadero and is often called the 'city of bicycles'. Indeed there are plenty of bicycles there!

Cárdenas wurde 1828 auf einem Sumpfgebiet gegründet und wuchs zu einem bedeuteten Zuckeranbaugebiet. Nach und nach wurden die Sümpfe trocken gelegt. Hier haben wir das erste Mal das Gefühl im richtigen und realen Kuba gelandet zu sein - mit Varadero hat diese Stadt nichts mehr gemein. Pferdekutschen, Fahrräder, wenige Motorräder und alte Autos beherrschen das Strassenbild.

Cárdenas was built on a swamp and expanded to a centre of the sugar industry together with nearby Matanzas. Gradually, the swamps were drained. Here we found the real Cuba. Cárdenas has nothing in common with Varadero. Horse carriages, bicyles, few motorcycles and old cars dominate the streets.

Wenn man mag kann man sich von einer casa zur nächsten weiter reichen lassen. Das ist die einfachste Art zu reisen. Natürlich muss man wissen wo man als nächstes stoppen möchte. Es hat aber auch zum Vorteil, dass sich die Leute sehr gerne einbringen und einem die schönsten Ortschaften und Sachen empfehlen können. So kann man auch mal eine Nacht länger bleiben um noch das eine oder andere zu besichtigen.

Wir verbrachten den Nachmittag mit Kleider waschen. Eine richtige Herausforderung und vor allem noch richtige Handarbeit! Die Waschmaschine hat unten nur einen Motor und dreht die Kleider im Wasser. Danach müssen sie von Hand ausgewaschen werden und werden am Schluss von der Maschine geschleudert. So richtig sauber werden die Kleider zwar nicht, aber sie riechen wieder angenehm und für den Urlaub reicht es.

We spent the afternoon washing our clothes. A real challenge, and above all still a lot of manual labour! The washing machine has only a single engine and spins the clothes in the water. Then they must be rinsed by hand and spun dry by the machine. The clothes don't get all too clean, but they smell nice, and for the journey it's enough.
