Sego Canyon und Arches National Park (Utah)

Some serious snow made the route to the Bryce Canyon National Park difficult to pass. Since our rental

car didn't come with winter tires, there was no way of visiting the park. Too bad! So we ended up spending a casual time in Cedar City and decided to head North to the small town of Green River.

The next day the weather was great again. First we headed off to Sego Canyon to the north of Thompson, which calls itself a city but is far from this. There, some very interesting pictographs (stone paintings) and petroglyphs (stone carvings) can be found. What is special about them is that they span a very long period of time (several thousands of years) and it is very interesting to compare the different styles of the people who left them. The place itself is somewhat special too. The stone 'images' are well worth a visit but the place as such has a very dark atmosphere about it.

Our next stop was the Arches National Park. It is famous for its large number of stone arches all over the park. The geological formations in the park are very impressive indeed. It is hard to believe that the - sometimes dozens of meter high and wide - arches were created over millions of year by nature alone. And it is hard to believe that the same forces that have created these wonders will also let them vanish over time. We wer more than impressed, but let's have the pictures talk for themselves.

Einige Zentimeter Schnee machten die Strasse zum Bryce Canyon Nationalpark ein wenig rutschig. Da unser Mietauto keine Winterreifen hatte, war an den geplanten Besuch des Parks nicht zu denken. Schade! So

Am anderen Tag herrschte wieder schönstes Wetter. Als erstes fuhren wir in den Sego Canyon nördlich von Thompson. Der Ort nennt sich selber 'Stadt', besteht aber nur aus wenigen Häusern, die meisten davon Fertighäuser auf Rädern. Im Sego Canyon finden sich einige interessante und bestens erhaltene Malereien auf Stein. Speziell an ihnen ist, dass sie einen Zeitraum von mehreren tausend Jahren umfassen und es sehr spannend ist, die verschiedenen Kunststile miteinander zu vergleichen. Der Ort selbst ist auch sehr speziell. Die Zeichnungen sind zwar auf jeden Fall einen Besuch wert, ansonsten hat der Ort aber eine sehr dunkle Atmosphäre.

Unser nächster Halt war der Arches Nationalpark. Er ist für seine grosse Anzahl an Steinbögen und -brücken bekannt, die sich im gesamten Park finden. Die geologischen Formationen des Park sind in der Tat ausgesprochen beeindruckend. Es ist kaum zu glauben, dass die - teils dutzende von Metern hohe und breite - Brücken über Millionen von Jahren hinweg ganz natürlich entstanden sind und dass dieselben Kräfte, die sie entstehend liessen, sie dereinst auch wieder verschwinden lassen werden. Wir waren auf jeden Fall überwältigt und lassen die Bilder für uns sprechen.
